Bolingbrook's 2023 snow angels program
A resident-led completely volunteer effort focused on neighbors helping neighbors shovel (and salt) their private property after snow events in Bolingbrook, Illinois.
Snow-covered sidewalks can be hazardous for everyone. Bolingbrook’s Snow Angels Program pairs older residents (and residents with physical disabilities) with nearby neighbors who volunteer to assist them with snow removal on their sidewalks and walkways.
Along with fostering stronger community relationships and relieving some of the stress that comes from a snowfall or freeze, Snow Angels make our sidewalks safer for those who are outside during the winter weather – like postal carriers, delivery drivers, public safety (firefighters, police officers), children walking to school, and other neighbors walking their pets.
VOLUNTEER AS A BOLINGBROOK SNOW ANGEL
Because helping your neighbors is SNOW much fun! We refresh the volunteer list annually, so if you'd like to help you must re-register for the 2023/24 snow season!
You can sign up online to offer help as a volunteer. The Snow Angels Program will work to pair you with a nearby neighbor. We will be in touch when you have been matched with a neighbor in need.
Things to Know about Signing Up to Volunteer as a Snow Angel:
- You will be assigned to a neighbor in need in Bolingbrook (we aim to find a neighbor near your home if possible)
- You will be contacted via e-mail with confirmation details when you have been assigned a neighbor
- You may not be assigned to help a neighbor immediately. Neighbors request help throughout the winter season. You may be assigned immediately, a few weeks after you sign up, or later during the winter.
- Your assignment depends on if there is a neighbor who needs help near you. If none of your neighbors sign up, we may not be able to assign you. Either way, we will try to keep in touch regularly!
- We ask that you help out your neighbor as soon as you are safely able (preferably within 24-hours of the end of a snow event)
- Sometimes more than one neighbor who needs help live in the same block. If you’re willing to help shovel and salt for more than one neighbor, please let us know on your registration form.
- Neighbors are expected to have a snow shovel and salt available for their Snow Angel. In rare instances that they are unable to provide these tools, we will notify you via email.
- Voluntary participation is only granted after agreeing and waiving liability for any claims, damage, injuries, etc. (see sign-up form)
REQUEST HELP FROM A SNOW ANGEL
If you’d like a neighbor to come help break the ice!
Here are the requirements neighbors must meet to request a Snow Angel:
- Be at least 60 years old or have a physical disability, and
- Live in Bolingbrook, Illinois (Private Property Owner), and
- Do not have appropriate resources (financial or family/friends nearby) to assist with snow removal
Note: Those living in apartment complexes or in any association that provides commercial snow removal are not eligible. Commercial property and/or businesses are not eligible for this program.
You can make the request online using this form. Here are some things to know when you sign up to request help from a Snow Angel:
- This is a completely volunteer effort. You are not guaranteed assistance. Service depends on if there’s a Snow Angel who has signed up near you. We work closely with the community to do the best volunteer recruitment and outreach we can, but we cannot guarantee that you will be matched. Also, help us spread the word on the need for volunteers. Share the volunteer sign-up link with friends, family, neighbors and on social media to encourage volunteer sign-ups. And please PUBLICLY and PRIVATELY thank your amazing snow angel whenever possible!
- If you are matched with a volunteer, we will notify you by email. Registration is on a rolling basis, so a Snow Angel may be available later in the season.
- The program is designed for major snow events (more than 2" of snow). Snow Angels will use their discretion on minor snow events.
- You may not receive immediate help during a snowfall. Please give your volunteer a reasonable amount of time to assist you - we recommend allowing 24-hours after a snow event concludes. Conditions have to be safe for your Snow Angel to be able to make it to your property. Your Snow Angel may have work, family, or personal matters that prevent them from immediately shoveling and salting your sidewalk or walkway.
- You should have a shovel and salt available located outside of your house for your volunteer to use.
- As always, for your safety and for the safety of your Snow Angel, you are not required to interact with your Snow Angel or even open your door.
